    GST Registration - An Overview

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a form of indirect tax introduced on 1st July, 2017 by the Government of India to create a unified tax structure in the country. GST Registration is mandatory for business entity offering sale of goods with annual turnover of Rs. 40 lakhs or service with annual turnover of Rs. 20 lakhs.

GST has majorly three components which include Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST), State Goods and Service Tax (SGST), Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST). CGST and SGST is leviable under Intra-state Sales i.e within a state whereas IGST is leviable on Inter-State Sales i.e sale from one state to another.

GST Registration is mandatory for certain businesses. Carrying on business without GST Registration is an offence under GST.

    What is GSTIN?

GSTIN is a unique 15-digit alphanumeric code that is allotted to each Firm/Company/Individual, who are registered under GST.The government has ensured that everything under GST is digital so that there is maximum transparency with minimum corruption.

The first 2 digits of the GSTIN represent the state code which is given as per the 2011 census.

The next 10 digits are the PAN number of the entity.

The 14th digit is Z by default.

The 15th or the last digit is the Checksum digit. It comes, automatically, as a result of the calculation of the other 14 digits.
